About

Standards and Guidelines

We strove to follow these standards and guidelines when digitizing materials:

- Texas Heritage Digitization Initiative (THDI) Standards for Cultural Heritage Digitization Projects
- Colorado Digitization Program (CDP) Digital Audio Best Practices, Version 2.1
- National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Guidelines for Digitizing Archival Materials for Electronic Access
- CDP Metadata Working Group Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices, Version 2.1.1
- University of Washington Libraries Metadata Implementation Group Metadata Guidelines for Collections Using CONTENTdm
- Western States Digital Standards Group Digital Imaging Best Practices, Version 2.0

Metadata

We mapped our metadata fields to Dublin Core (DC) since CONTENTdm uses DC for metadata harvesting. We did not utilize any official controlled vocabularies but created an in-house controlled vocabulary for the Subject field. We created a Data Dictionary that shows how we mapped metadata, and is available to interested parties upon request.

Content

Because of the volume of materials in the Reavis Papers, limited space on our hosted server and limited man hours, we are initially providing digital-surrogate samples of the documents, cassette tapes, video tapes and visual images in the analog collection, rather than trying to include everything. However, we did create a metadata record for every file folder and tape, and we aimed to digitize a good cross-section of content types. We will be adding more digitized content to the digital collection as we have time, copyright clearance and server space to do so.
